The first saltwater taffy was made, as the legend goes, entirely by accident in Atlantic City in 1883. A monumental storm resulted in the flooding of all the shops near the sea, including that of a taffy-maker, who nevertheless sold his wares to tourists afterwards, and with great success.

The original, hand-pulled saltwater taffy was first sold as a souvenir by Joseph Fralinger in 1885, and it can still be purchased all along the Atlantic City Boarwalk, as well as almost anywhere else by the seaside, all over the USA.

Unlike toffee, its British equivalent, saltwater taffy comes in a vast array of flavours - try peanut butter, molasses, cranberry, chocolate, mint, orange, root beer and peach just for starters... and Fralinger's antique-style, sea-green assortment tins with their pretty, century-old designs are perfect little packages of nostalgia.
