A stately brick home in Hartford, Connecticut, is unassumingly nestled in deep green woods. Coming upon it, one would never guess it was here that the father of American literature, Mark Twain, wrote some of his most prolific works (The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, The Prince and the Pauper, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, etc.) and raised a family.

Twain once said, “[Our house] was of us, and we were in its confidence and lived in its grace and in the peace of its benediction.” It’s not the Victorian spires reaching to the sky, nor the wide wraparound porch that leaves an impression on visitors, but the comfortable family atmosphere of the home and the spirit of the man who called it his own.
