The Whaley House was built in 1857 by Thomas Whaley, a successful young businessman from New York, as a residence for himself and his family during 1868 to 1871 it was also a general store, a county courthouse, a polling station and a commercial theatre and ballroom for the San Diego townspeople.
These aspects of the house have been faithfully restored and it is now a museum, which makes no secret of its haunted credentials; it is widely believed to be one of, if not the most haunted house in the United States.
The alleged paranormal activity is attributed to a number of significant violent events which took place here throughout the years, including the suicide of Violet Whaley in 1885, the hanging of James Robinson for larceny from the back of a wagon on the site of the house, and the accidental death of a young girl who broke her neck tripping on a low-hanging clothes line.
As well as poltergeist activity, visitors and staff say they have seen apparitions of Mr and Mrs Whaley themselves, and those of a swarthy gypsy woman and a teenage girl. Heavy footsteps are said to have been heard in the upstairs rooms when no one was there, and shadowy figures, orbs and mists have been seen and photographed on numerous occasions.
