Forget Salem; if dark shapes, poltergeist activity, disembodied screams and oppressive clouds of anger and evil indicate anything, it's Pendle in Lancashire that's rife with the restless spirits of people condemned to death for witchcraft and murder. On 17th August 1612, in a group execution of unprecedented size, ten so-called witches were hanged out of the eleven who went to trial following imprisonment in Lancaster Castle and a complex intrigue of inter-family feuding and accusations. The trials are also unique for the detail in which they were recorded and the wealth of documents relating to the case which still remain, thanks to the court clerk, whose account of the proceedings was published as 'The Wonderfull Discoverie of Witches in the Countie of Lancaster'.

A modern perspective reveals a muddle of possibilities, but it's certain that whatever took place between the covens of Pendle, we'll never be quite sure to what extent the supernatural was involved – only that reports of strange happenings continue to emanate from Pendle Hill, where the rituals are believed to have been conducted, and the old farms and houses nearby, in and around the village of Newchurch, where the witches' families lived.

Pendle Hill itself is bleak, haggard and mist-shrouded enough to engender thoughts of horror and mystery, and it hosts a spooky gathering every Hallowe'en. Ghost tours of Lancaster Castle and the reputedly haunted areas are also available - just take the 'Witch Way' bus!
