People have reported ghostly sightings at Dunster for years and years, but the most famous ghosts that are seen the most often are the Grey Lady and the Foot Guard, who wears a three pointed hat. These two manifest themselves as blurry shapes or faces but there are others who are less well formed and manifest with noise, chills, feeling of general unease or else in the form or bright floating orbs. The dungeons starved many and old stories said bodies were really left to rot so people didn’t get a proper burial which may be why they haven’t settled properly.

This is an old ruined castle and there are plenty of spine chilling stories about what’s gone on here in the past. In times of siege soldiers have been forced to eat their horses and even Cromwell was afraid of it and had it ruined. You can always tell something is up if animals are afraid and there are stories about workmen’s dogs wanting to spend days in the car rather than come in with their masters.

Psychics and mediums gather here all the time and even the National Trust has had it exorcised at the request of staff…

Hi Natalie - School groups can visit Dunster Castle, and even better, they're able to arrange a ghost tour round the castle and grounds. Tell your teachers they need to book though the castle. Good luck with your project.

loved exploing old castles always have done , visited dunster yesterday, nothing out the ordinary, must say i loved the place, fascinating cant believe it was just handed over to the national trust after being in the family for 600 years, i looked around liked it ,fell in love with it . now it is just a sight seer, if only walls could talk, GHOST WALKS , WEDDINGS ! brilliant though, for the public to come and look around,i walked around hoping to see family of long ago residents of dunster castle yesterday, but, sadly no, 600 years ,i would have expected something. i left , feeling a little bit gloomy. i visited the stables on my way out , GLOOMY ? or what ? i turned to walk out and i felt two tugs on my jacket, what you doing ? i asked my husband, but he was no where near me , he was right up the other end of the stables. , i laughed , he asked me what i was laughing at , nothing i replied, i just had my jacket tugged and NEVER MIND !

I visited the castle back in April. When me and my partner got there it was still closed so we went for a walk around the gardens to take pictures around. We were looking at the castle form the hill opposite it and i thought i saw someone at one of the windows. Althought my partner couldnt see anything i still asked him to take pictures just in case.. we then went inside the castle and everything was fine but when i went home and checked the pictures i noted that there's a woman standing at the window where i thought i saw someone. She has a black victorian dress and her face is all blurry. i wonder if that's the grey woman? i am not sure beacause the dress is black! where could i upload the picture? i would like to read other people' opinion.i am not a big ghosts fan ( i get scary quite easily) so i am not an expert in this area..

On our visit to Dunster this summer we had a possible encounter with the "grey lady". My family and I were in the crypt and took a photo of the back room and saw a blurred image on the digital screen. My daughter of 4 went out of the room saying "where is she?". We took another picture from the same spot and the picture was clear. My partner also had an uneasy feeling in there and didn't want to stay there. I'm not conviced that there was a ghost presence but somethings are hard to deny!

voice of a child by the river

while me and my family was playing in the river my auntie was videoing my cousin on her mobile phone. a couple of hours later she checked the footage she had recorded to find she had not only recorded my cousins but had also recorded the voice of a young girl singing quite loud so it must have been close to the phone but no one saw a little girl. the little girl sang 'want to get away into the night'. Any one with any information on a little girl living or dying in the castle would you kindly let me know on k.dyer.pembroke@vigin.net thanks..

Through the eyes of a child

I recently visited Dunster Castle with my young family and neighbours. We toured the castle on the whole quite happily. The 8 year old and 5 year old were generally quite happy although became quite nervous in the Crypt - drafty windows and bad weather adding to fertile imaginations.

The reason I am adding my experience is because of the reactions of my 3 year old daughter. She thoroughly disliked the crypt, asking to be taken out and shaking. She calmed down for some more of the tour, chatting to the guides and looking round the rooms. We entered another room - I believe a guest bedroom- and once again she reacted dramatically, shaking, crying and refusing to stay in the room.

At the end of our visit we naturally visited the shop, she became edgy in here. Because she likes horses I decided to show her what remained of the original stables. This resulted in her most violent reaction, she sank onto the floor, started to yell and asked her daddy to carry her out. She took a long time to calm down from this event. It was only after we left the castle and arrived home that we had a chance to read about the history of this beautiful place, imagine my surprise and distress when everywhere my daughter became distressed was named as being a paranormal "hotspot".
