Bounded by densely-wooded hills, the Ythan River and a large lake, Fyvie Castle instantly conjures up an atmosphere lifted directly out of a Gothic novel.
It was built in 1211 as a baronial fortress and palace, and was owned by five different families in succession, each traditionally believed to have built one of its fairytale towers. It is now maintained by the National Trust and contains an impressive collection of tapestries and paintings by world-renowned artists. Many of its original interior features are also still present, most notably an imposing stone wheel staircase.
The most famous of Fyvie Castle's ghosts is the Green Lady, so called because in reports of sightings, she is always described as wearing a green dress. She is said to be the ghost of Lilia Seton, wife of Alexander, who bought the castle in the 1590s. She bore him a daughter when he wanted a son, and died mysteriously not long after, to be replaced in under five months by her own niece. The story suggests that the hauntings began on their wedding night and have continued ever since.
There is also said to be a phantom trumpeter, who was sent away to the West Indies by the local Laird, who wanted his girlfriend as a mistress. His ghost is said to have sounded his trumpet in the castle ever after, as a harbinger of death to the resident Laird.
