A romantic ruin sprung straight from a Gothic fairytale, 13th century Berry Pomeroy Castle is now nothing more than the outer shell of what once formed the beginnings of a luxurious mansion converted from the original defensive structure, but it was abandoned in 1688 under mysterious circumstances. Since then, the castle and its grounds have been the setting for many spectral encounters and inexplicable phenomena. A White Lady, believed to have been Margaret Pomeroy, emerges from the dungeons at night, where she was imprisoned in life by her sister, and climbs to the ramparts, from where she beckons to passers-by. The Blue Lady appears to visitors in all parts of the castle and reputedly tries to lead them through the ruins to specific areas as though to show them something, wearing a desperate expression on her face. She is said to be the shade of a girl raped by her father, a Norman lord, who then strangled the resulting child in the castle. Shouts and loud bumps and clatters are also sometimes heard near the ramparts, from which two Pomeroy brothers are said to have leapt in full armour on their horses rather than face defeat at the hands of an army laying siege to the castle. There's also a ghostly cavalier and a grey lady, and glowing orbs, voices and chill winds have been described by visitors.
