Local Bladnoch history indicates that the now ruined Baldoon Castle was home to the Dalrymples in the mid-17th Century.

Legend tells that their daughter, Janet, though devoted to her parents, defied them in her passionate love for the penniless Archibald, the third son of Lord Rutherford. Despite her pleas to prevent it, she was forced to marry Sir David Dunbar of Baldoon, and when the newly-weds retired to the bridal chamber of the castle, an horrific incident occurred that was never explained. Desperate shouts and screams were heard from within the room during the night and when the door was broken down, Sir David was discovered stabbed, and Janet crouching against the wall, splashed with his blood and irretrievably insane.

She is still said to haunt the castle grounds, dressed in her blood-spattered wedding dress, particularly on the night of the anniversary of her death, 12th September.
