The Dutch Royal family have four palaces at their disposal, and this palace, in the very heart of Amsterdam, is one of them. If it doesn't look to you to be quite as grand as a palace should, what with the very square, many windowed facade, be it's probably because it was built in the 17th Century to be the Town Hall and later converted. If you're interested in the architecture you'll want to know that the inspiration for it was taken from the great buildings of Rome.

One of the great details inside the building are the huge floor maps in one of the great halls, these show the northern and southern hemispheres which extra credence given to the Netherlands and lands explored by her people.

At the very top of the palace is a small domed cupola, under which you can watch the ships come and go in the harbour.

For a time the building was considered to be one of the eight wonders of the world?
