Visit only the urban areas and beach resorts of St. Croix and you might never have more than a glimpse of the existence of its splendid inland lushness. On the other hand, a ride at the western fringe of this largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands reveals a landscape of plentiful old tree growth and plant life lying alongside the western shore of the island. Thanks to the presence in this area of Paul & Jill's Riding Stables, you can take in this visually rich natural mix in an easy hour and a half ride that begins at the farm premises of husband and wife team Paul Wojciechowski and Jill Hurd.

Small riding groups set off along level, winding but easy trails that are quickly enveloped both by the density of the lower-lying plant life but also by the nearby enormous and wide-branched trees that create a green canopy at many points before you reach the road that skirts the shoreline. Jill is certainly a lifelong expert on the surrounding vegetation and the intricate co-existence between the larger trees and the vines and plants that often cover them.

A brief trot along the beach as you emerge from the rainforest provides a vista of a still unspoilt, winding oceanfront that is largely deserted unless you come here on a major holiday -- and on such occasions, Jill will take riders instead into deeper areas of the forest. Paul will usually join the group out on the sands long enough to take individual photos of each rider, however you can also choose to bring along your own camera and have them stash it in a saddle bag so you can take your own shots. For those who enjoy riding, this location and outfitter provides an easy and fairly short outing that still brings you face to face with a dramatically verdant side of St. Croix you might not otherwise encounter.
