This long ribbon of pale sandy beach has perfect windsurfing conditions. It’s also one of the most beautiful beaches on the island. It’s so long that it feels like it’s empty for great stretches, but in places there’s a smattering of bars, stores and places to hire watersports equipment.

The best section for swimmers is the Playa Barca area fronting the lagoon, and naturists tend to hover round the secluded section by Risco Pasco. The rest of the beach is mostly home to windsurfers, kitesurfers and people generally waiting for the perfect wave, but there are good underwater vistas as well, so Sotavento appeals to divers and snorkelers as well.

The Windsurfing World Cup is held here annually in late July early August. The wind comes from side off shore most of the time which creates small choppy waves close to the beach and round the beach break and the further out you go the deeper it gets.
