The Village of Tsurui located close to the Akan National Park in rural Hokkaido is most famous for the Tancho more popularly known as the Japanese Red Crowned Crane. The cranes are approximately 140 cm tall and are as white as the Hokkaido snow topped off with a crimson red patch on the head along with black throats and wing tips. There are only 2000 of these birds left in the world and a large chunk of the population live in this small corner of Hokkaido. These very vocal birds make your hair stand on end (not just because of the freezing temperatures) as they appear to gracefully dance with each other in the snowy fields. Witnessing the dancing cranes is a quite a magical experience.

This is a scenic and unspoilt area, well worth a visit.

Lake Akan and it's streams are beautiful, especially in Autumn.

The cranes of Tsurui are magical, and they really do dance in the fields.

The seafood in this area is plentiful, fresh and delicious, as is the dairy and vegetables.

If you want a lovely Onsen family hotel near Tsurui, the comfy and spacious Woody's Hotel is the place.

Situated amongst the Tsurui wetlands, its friendly owners will ensure your visit is memorable. Ask the New York university educated Ayaka if her chef husband will prepare you a European inspired dinner, it will be delicious!
