Wildlife of Wild Newfoundland

Listed under Wildlife in Newfoundland, Canada.

Wild and untamed, the Avalon Peninsula is a dramatic landscape of rocky cliffs and coves formed in the battles between glaciers and hardened sea ice. Caribou, whales and puffins and other seabirds thrive in this harsh environment, and though people have lived in the area since the 1600s there are still many areas of pristine wilderness for adventurers to explore.

Visitors walking and cycling around the peninsular can expect to see caribou herds roaming wild through the wooded areas. Hunting restrictions and better environmental protection means caribou numbers have increased and there are now around 500,000 caribou in Newfoundland. There is also a large colony of gannets living in ridges in the cliffs of islands off the peninsular which can be easily spotted from the mainland.
