Nugget Point is home to a diverse range of marine and bird life which changes seasonally due its use as a breeding colony for a variety of species. It’s best known for its penguins, with six different species co-habituating in the area, yellow-eyed penguins, blue penguins, snares crested penguins, rock hopping penguins, erect crested penguins and the fiordland crested penguins (there are small signs, erected by conservationists, which help you tell them apart.).

As well as the penguins, Nugget Point is a great place to spot sea lions, Hector‘s dolphins, leopard seals, elephant seals and the protected New Zealand Fur Seal. Nugget Point is named for the boulders and rocky points or nuggets, creating an elongated rocky shore line, which offers rock pools, beaches and sheltered snorkelling areas so you can get pretty close to marine life.
