The squawking voices of huge scarlet macaws ring out amid the clucking mating calls of the red-eyed tree frogs and the distant sounds of the big cats in the Parque Nacional Corcovado. Eight different kinds of ecosystem make up the park, including mangrove forests, palm groves and one of the largest areas of lowland tropical rainforest left in the world. A variety of turtles nest on the beaches at the parks edge and crocodiles lurk in its rivers.

As well as having the largest community of scarlet macaws in Central America, there are jaguars, cougars, anteaters, transparent glass frogs, snook, tapir and the unusual but descriptively named fishing bulldog bat. Many endangered animals and plants live in the Parque Nacional Corcovado, so it’s important to be mindful of the damage you do when visiting and respect the fragile ecosystems by not bringing in or removing anything.

The best time to visit the park is in the dry season between January and April, but it will still be very humid and the trekking is quite difficult.
