Svalbard during winter was without question the most surreal and memorable trip of my life. Sure, the weather is treacherous in January (-30C), with windchill of -55C, but this is a small price to pay for the beautiful deep blue that envelopes the wide expanses of snow and sharp peaks during the few hours of sub-horizon daylight. At night you will often see amazing aurora displays, and a wondrous sky so clear that one regularly is able to see man-made satellites with the naked eye. Activiies include snowmobiling, ice-caving and dog-sledding. Its definitely not cheap, but well worth the experience. It is the world's most northerly destination for commercial aircraft, with flights available from Tromso and Oslo.

A polar bear encounter in Svalbard

I spent 2 weeks on an old Russian icebreaker here. on the 4th July we celebrated Independence day on the back of the boat with the American passengers. At the same time a polar bear was by the side of the boat eating the last remains of a seal he had caught that day.
