Listed under Wildlife in Mountain States, United States.
This sanctuary was mapped out around the world’s largest herd of elk, who number about 7,500 at their migratory peak during winter. Here the grasses stay uncovered by snow and the elk amble down, a lot of them from Yellowstone, to graze here until the thaw.
The Boy Scouts of America make a killing each year auctioning the antlers the elk shed and they collect – but they have to give 80% of the money to the refuge.
As well as elk the refuge protects bison, mule deer and bighorn sheep. If you want to get really close to them the best way is to creep up on them on a sleigh.
