Located on the Shire river, Liwonde National Park is the best of Malawi’s reserves: best for the varied scenery and large numbers of animals. Lions are scarce, but the park is home to leopards, zebras, thousands of hippos and crocodiles, impala water buck, baboons and hundreds of elephants, among exotic creatures to tick off your 'to see' list. There are also hundreds of different species of birds.
Two Black Rhinos have recently been re-introduced to the region, so hopefully rhinos will soon be added to that list. The dry season is the time to guarantee you see the best variety of animals as they roam closer to the waterways. It's also easier to get around and you have less chance of getting your car bogged in the mud.
