Humpback Whales in Madagascar

Listed under Wildlife in Madagascar.

Between June and September Humpback whales grace the waters around Isle Sainte Marie to give birth to and raise their calves in the warm waters, and their booming, melodic calls permeate the oceans quiet.

Whales surround the island and even travel through the narrow channel that separates Isle Sainte Marie from mainland Madagascar, so you can get an excellent view of their graceful, 30-ton passage, but you can also get closer by taking a boat trip out amongst the pods.

When feeding, whales gather in groups to herd plankton together and trap blooms while animals feed individually. This is an awe inspiring sight to behold, as is the whales frolicking play and the mothers' gentle direction as the calves continue their first migration.

Orchids and lemur-covered mango and palm trees cover Isle Sainte Marie and its outlying reefs make it a fantastic place to dive and snorkel.
