A quarter of this National Park is covered by a vast salt plain, part of the Kalahari Basin. During the rainy season from March to November, the basin fills and attracts an amazing array of wading birds, including flocks of thousands of flamingos. In-excess of 340 kinds of bird make the park their home during this annual animal influx.

As well as birds there are lots of other animals to spot: black faced Impala are endemic to Etosha, one of the last herds of wild Black Rhinos live here, and guides claim Etoshan elephants are the tallest in Africa. Etosha National Park is home to 93 species of mammals, including giraffes, lions, leopards and rhinos. Be careful if you’re visiting - the park closes at sunset and if you’re not booked into a lodge by that time you could end up sleeping in your car amongst the animals…
