Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary

Listed under Wildlife in Queensland, Australia.

Koalas look a lot cuter and cuddlier than they really are, but despite their preference to sleep all day, and bad tempers when they don’t get to, they are still an animal that lots of people want to meet.

One of the oldest of Australia’s koala sanctuaries is Currumbin, known also for its wildlife hospital. The spread of settlements into koala's very specific habitat requirements has meant that there are many animals who are becoming sick or injured and Currumbin’s aim is to rehabilitate them and return them to the wild. If they’re not able to return to the wild they are housed in the sanctuary in their natural bush and rainforest habitats with other Australian native animals.

Sanctuary visitors will also see Tasmanian Devils, kangaroos, platypuses, reptiles and enjoy the southern hemispheres largest walk-in aviary. Currumbin is also known for its Rainbow Lorikeets who turn up in great flocks every day for a feed.

This is a great place to bring children, or to come if you’d like to meet a koala in person. Be aware, if you're able to hold them, they will bite, the best thing to do is keep their mouths full of eucalyptus leaves (which keeps them chemically sleepy as well as subdued.).
