The Museum of the City of New York isn't just a museum, it's also an art gallery. Its M.O. at its conception and founding was to show the people of New York their own city, and art has just as much a place in that as do artefacts.

The museum's collection includes several re-created rooms from the house of John D. Rockefeller, a chair that supposedly belonged to the very first person of European heritage to be born in New York, a large collection of memorabilia from the Golden Era of Broadway, many, many photos of the city and its inhabitants, with a focus on the depression years, and books, toys, prints, paintings, clothing and decorative and useful objects from all the eras of New York so far.

Modern New Yorkers have a wealth of museums to explore along with this one, many of them on the same strip of road often now referred to as 'Museum Mile'. The Museum of the City of New York is at the northern end on Fifth Avenue facing Central Park.

Admission is $10 for adults.
