This narrow wedding cake of a building in dark pink stone is wedged between Red Square and Manege Square, and presents visitors with a huge range of national historic artefacts from the remains and tools of the prehistoric tribes who are the first human residents of Russia to amazing pieces of art and artifice purchased or commissioned by the Romanov dynasty.

The collection was begun in 1872 and its items now number in the millions, including Novogorod scrolls, 6th Century manuscripts, a Viking longboat dug out of the Volga and numerous ceramic and wooden pieces from the age of the Russian fold arts.
