Colombia’s National Museum is also its oldest, started in 1823, and one of the oldest in South America. Around 20,000 pieces make up the collection which focuses on local art and ethnographic artefacts divided into sections by period of history.

Impressively, the collection begins with Colombian men’s adornments from about 10,000 BC, but some of the largest collections are from the Spanish era or period of afro-Colombian blending as slaves began to arrive in large numbers. There’s a very impressive pre-Columbian tools exhibit and another featuring jewellery and handicrafts from the same period. The museum also has a modern art collection and a café.

The ‘fort’ its in is fort-like for a reason, its domes, arches and inordinately thick, stone walls used to be a prison.
