This charming, 1791, Baroque building began as the home of Cuba's Governor under colonial rule, before becoming the Presidential Palace, and is now the home to the collection for the Museum of Havana – as in a museum to the history and culture of this city. This building was the seat of government for more than a hundred years and is one of the best preserved buildings in the Habana Vieja.
Havana has had more than its fair share of drama, including hosting battles in the War of Independence and the Revolution, and that's after its establishment under Spanish rule. In addition to the flags and weapons, relics of the wars that have raged around and in this city, the museum displays archaeological finds, art, folkloric crafts and domestic items that began in the Havanan homes of the great and the good. But it's supposed to be worth wandering though just for the building with its courtyards, marble floors, verandas and huge white marble statue of Christopher Columbus.
