The Historical Museum of Crete is like the younger, slightly less impressive sibling of the Heraklion Archaeological Museum. It follows on from the Archaeological Museum and is only a short walk away, but many people over look it because they’ve had their museum fill.
Starting with the Roman and Byzantine era, the museum features a Medieval and Renaissance collection, folk art pieces, a collection of items relating to the Cretan independence movement and items belonging to people who were living on Crete during the Second World War.
Walking into the museum you’re greeted with a map of Heraklion town and the island, after which everything is laid out chronologically over three floors. Almost every item is explained in both Greek and English which many people are surprised about – especially if they’ve had a look over the website first. There are religious vestments and vessels, carvings, coins, jewellery and miniatures crafted by the Byzantine and Venetian inhabitants, flags and weapons from the Cretan Independent State and hundreds of examples of local arts and artefacts: woven baskets and lace and a life size replica of a traditional local village home.
