The Dubai Museum is aptly positioned inside Dubai's oldest building, the Al Fahidi Fort, which dates from 1787. This is the Emirates' main museum, designed to present to visitors the way of life of the people who live here, both in traditional and modern times, bearing in mind that the UAE as a country has really only been around since the 1940s. In aid of this multiple dioramas have been constructed, including one representing a modern oil negotiation. The museum charts the discovery of oil here and how this event changed this country for good, as well as displaying artefacts from as long ago as 3000BC. There's a display showing how to build a dhow and a section on the early pearl divers.

Don't be put off by the sparse exhibits in the courtyard, as with all things in Dubai, they want you to come inside where it's cool – in this case come underground.
