Virunga National Park stands out because of the diverse range of habitats within its boundaries; its steppes, savannas, lava plains, lowlands, swamps, high mountains, forests and ice fields supports many rare and endangered species. One third of the world’s threatened mountain gorilla population lives in Virunga Park, co-habitating with Okapi, giraffes, buffaloes, and forest elephants. So far over 1000 different animal species have been found in the park’s 790,000 hectares. It is also the home of Africa's two most active volcanoes, which erupt every couple of years.
