Sequoia was only America's second national park, after Yellowstone, and its 1,635 square kilometres were declared in 1890, including the US' highest point Mount Whitney and the edges of Kings Canyon National Park, but mostly to protect the giant, ancient Sequoia forests. The park has within its boundaries five of the world's ten largest trees.

This is what the Sierra Nevarda looked like before European settlement, and most of the park is still classified as wilderness: 84% can only be accessed on foot (or horseback). Some of the most famous trails through the wilderness sections of the park are the Pacific Crest Trail and the John Muir Trail.
