The Selous Reserve is the savannah home to a healthy population of elephants, black rhinos, wild dogs, cheetahs, giraffes, hippopotami and crocodiles, as well as wildlife from both Eastern and Southern Africa and around 440 different species of bird. In season the plains attract migrating herds and even greater numbers of birds.

Despite all the wildlife to see, the Selous isn’t a particularly popular safari destination, probably because of the difficult road access – visitors have to come in by light aircraft or train. Most of the visitor infrastructure is around the Stiegler Canyon and along the Rufiji River where the wildlife gather to drink, and most of the safaris in this park are done on foot – different from most African National Parks.

You can also arrange some over night fly camping expeditions where you're flown in somewhere remote for the night.
