Mulu National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and quite rightly so, for it is home to the superlatives of Borneo’s wild, unspoiled heritage.

Deer Cave is the largest in the world, a dizzyingly huge natural cathedral, five times larger than St. Paul’s. It is set miles from anywhere in the midst of dense rainforest, and is home to literally millions of bats; their evening exodus in search of an insect dinner is truly indescribable.

You’ll need a head for heights to explore properly, as access is mainly by plank bridge, and the same is true of the other caves nearby, home to tiny swiftlets (the manufacturers of the glassy, white birds’ nests that allegedly work so well as soup) and awesome, surreal stalactites and stalagmites.

Unsurprisingly, there is some exceptional adventure-caving to be had, as well as canopy-walking and wildlife-spotting.
