This marine sancturay runs along the coast of Marin County into San Luis Obispo County, and stretches quite a way out to sea, its protective net of perservation powers encompassing Monterey Bay and the surrounding sea – which is one of the world's most diverse marine ecosystems.

It's estimated that the sanctuary is home to 26 different species of marine mammal, 345 varied species of fish, four different kinds of turtles and more than 450 different kinds of algae. The sanctuary also supports 94 species of seabird.

As well as the biology preserved in these waters, this bit of coastline has also been the un-doing of many, many shipwrecks – about 1,200 – which also come under the juristiction of the park.
