This park, which spans the border of Panama and Colombia and is run though by the Pan American Highway, has an extraordinary range of plant and animal life, which is why it’s been declared a World Heritage Site. For example the park has about a quarter of all the known bird species of Colombia, but in only one per cent of the country’s land. On the landscape side the park is a place of low hills, forests and humid flats.
