With a wealth of volcanic features including one of the densest concentration of recently active volcanoes on the planet, Katmai National Park is a paradise for volcanophiles. The Park is accessible only by floatplane or boat, and the amazing volcanic scenery is best viewed from above, on a flightseeing trip, or by an extended backpacking sojourn in the wilderness. The famous Valley of 10,000 Smokes is a 16-mile-long, 700-foot-deep pyroclastic flow deposit created in the colossal 1912 eruption of Novarupta, which drained the magma chamber beneath Katmai volcano, causing the latter to collapse. Today, Katmai volcano's amazing caldera contains a dark green crater lake. Martin, Mageik, Trident, Griggs, Douglas, and Fourpeaked volcanoes all feature steaming craters. Katmai is also world-famous for its unparalleled bear-viewing opportunities.
