The names translation means birch mountains, an apt description, but it is the fauna not the terrain or the flora which the Hustai National Park is best known for - in particular its indigenous horse, the Takhi (Przewalski's Horse). The park is also one of the world’s best preserved steppe environments, its boundaries include mountain steppe, steppe and deserts of sand dunes.

Khustain Nuruu Nature Reserve

This steppe reserve was designated to house and protect Mongolia’s indigenous Takhi or Przewalski's horse (similar in appearance to stripe-less zebras.). Pushed to the brink of extinction by hunting and cattle grazing there is now a healthy population of released and wild Takhi roaming the 222,000 acres.
