The Great Smoky Mountains National Park covers not just the Great Smoky Mountains, but also the Blue Ridge Mountain range, and is the most visited park in the U.S. It's also one of the largest protected areas in the country. Within that vast space are the ground undulates from 267m above sea level to 1829m, and precipitation varies from 140cms a year to 220cms – creating all sorts of environmental conditions supporting too many forms of flora and fauna to begin mentioning...but the estimates run to approximately 10,000 different species of plants and animal that park officials have documented, and potentially 90,000 they haven't yet.

The park was where some of the fiercest fighting between Native Americans and settlers took place as the frontier rolled over and through it.
