Listed under National Parks in Mauritius.
This area of thick forest is the only National Park of Mauritius. The wealth of wildlife and plant life living within the forest is one of the main reasons the area has been protected – both by the local government and the people who make the World Heritage lists. At one end of the park there are marshes and heathland leading into dry lowland forest, but as the altitude gets higher so does the humidity. It’s the range of conditions that makes for the great variety.
There’s a road running though the park which you can drive along or take a bus around – if you think you’ll be too distracted to drive – but the best way to see the park is on foot, on some of the 60kms worth of trails and as far away from other humans as possible. That gives you the best chance of running upon the pink pigeons, once on the very brink of extinction, Mauritius Kestrels, parakeets, or the other bird species entirely unique to Mauritius.
