The New Almaden mercury mine was supposed to be the country's most productive until it ran out in 1927 and closed, and these days its land is part of the Almaden Quicksilver Country Park, which is known for being ahikers paradise.

Most entrances to the mine itself have been shut off so you may visit and not even realise what went on beneath your feet, so there's certainly no need to worry about being too close to mercury, but there are some parts of the mine that are open to visitors. Along with other structures that were build to support the mine – housing for 1,800 mine workers included! As well as these 'ruins' there's also a museum to the mine, which is housed in the building where the superintendents of the mine used to live. It has a very cool diorama of the interior of a mine shaft.

Part of the reason the park has such good hiking is that it's quite rugged and hilly – even mountainy, considering the highest point in the park is more than 1,100m above the lowest point.
