A treasury of Russian fine art, the Tretyakov Gallery displays art by Russian artists, artists who have had a profound effect on the Russian art world or those very close to it. Following the galleries wall by wall through more than 130,000 individual pieces the history and progression of Russian art is evident.

The collection was begun in 1856 and presented to the nation in 1892. The gallery was purpose built in a unique and rather Russian style (that it was in part designed by a Russian painter probably has something to do with this.) in 1902 just south of the Kremlin.

In 1985 the Tretyakov Gallery combined with a gallery of contemporary art and inherited some of the most famous of the angry socialist sculptures.
