The Rijksmuseum, in its handsome neo-Renaissance brick building, is best known for paintings from the Golden Age of Dutch art. Masterpieces include Rembrandt's The Night Watch and works by Vermeer, Van Ruisdael, van Heemskerck, Frans Hals and Jan Steen. The museum also has sections devoted to prints, sculpture, furniture including exquisite dolls houses, glass, porcelain and Asiatic art.

If a great art collection has a garden it can’t just be any old garden. This collection of grass and plants is stylishly arranged in various ways in both the Renaissance and Baroque styles, with flower gardens and hedges directing towards statues and summer houses.
This garden even has its own ruins which have been found all over the country then rebuilt here. It’s like an exhibit of Dutch architecture down the ages, a collection of pillars and gates and ornamental stonework that’s just too good to get rid of. Some of it’s kept inside now to stop any more weathering but the ‘Fragments Building’ is just as free as the garden.

Building affairs
The museum is a building area (2010). There is a temporary exhibition but this is limited. A crazy fact is that all the major museums in Amsterdam are rebuilt this year (!), so it's a disaster visiting museums.

What a crazy thing to do to try and do them all in the same year! What are they thinking!
Thanks very much for the heads up!
