Moscow's finest arts museum, with a huge collection of Western art. It has excellent displays of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art, with French Impressionists particularly well represented. A small annexe museum next door, the Musey Chastnykh Kollektsiy (Museum of Private Collections), shows highlights of the collection.

The Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts is one of Moscow’s largest museums and the largest documenting solely European Art. While St. Petersburg had The Hermitage, Moscow had nothing so the Pushkin Museum, which has no connection with the author beyond its name, was born, financed and constructed between 1898 and 1912. Beginning with a building rather than a collection the first exhibits were mostly replicas of classical statues. After the capital was relocated in 1918 some of the Hermitage’s collection of paintings were moved to the Pushkin Museum. Later the Pushkin also received an injection of art from the State Museum of Western Art and recovered from Nazi Germany in the aftermath of the war.
