This is one of the Caribbean’s favourite museums with a collection of over 3,000 pieces. That doesn’t seem like that many compared to other great European collections, but it was only started in the final days of 1965, by a local politician and philanthropist, who began by buying copies of masterpieces. Strangely the collection was chosen based on value rather than popularity.
One of the really nice things about the gallery is its layout of seven hexagonal glass rooved galleries which allow the gorgeous Caribbean light to pour in and illuminate the paintings.
Some of the big name artists with works in the collection are Rubens, Velasquez, Esteban Murillo and Lucas Cranach, but if one of the 3,000 had to be picked out as being of note it would have to be ‘Flaming June’ by Fredric Leighton, the painting of the orange clad woman resting in and arm chair.
