One of America's greatest art museums, the National Gallery of Art shows works in painting, sculpture, decorative arts, and works on paper from the 13th century on. The collections are split: Western painting and sculpture from the Middle Ages to the 18th century is shown in the grand neoclassical West Building. The sculptural East Building, designed by IM Pei, shows modern art.
