This collection is the circa 1990 hybrid of two earlier collections, those of the former Catalonian Art Museum and the Modern Art Museum, so it includes art from all the way back to the Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance periods to works from the Modern era in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Some of the earliest pieces from the 11th to 13th centuries were originally created to hang in churches or cathedrals in the Pyraneese and are presented in specially designed arch-window and domed frames that match their original wall space. There are several large ceiling pieces in the Romanesque collection as well, which is arranged in chronological order and is one of the world’s largest collections of this artistic style.

At the other end of the time scale the Modern collection has many works that influenced a young Picasso.

Free audio guides are available in a selection of languages and Thursday night is late opening.
