The 'Met' is to New York what the Louvre is to Paris. It's an astonishing museum in its scale and size - the best museum by far in the New World, and one of the 'must-visit' sights of New York. The collection of European art encompasses all ages from the Romans to Renoir, with works by all the masters on view. The Met's reach, though, is global: Egypt, Africa, the Middle East and Oceania are all represented and there is an extensive collection of American art. The programme of special exhibitions is excellent.

A wonderful place, full of excellent art. I am inspired whenever I go there!
Do you have a favourite gallery to visit or a recommended route? I'm going this year and I only have about four hours to see as much as possible - I know how tricky this can be from the Louvre!
It's pretty easy to navigate the Met, just go upstairs and let your senses guide you. Fours hours is a good time frame.
That's great, thanks for that. Any less famous pieces you think I shouldnt' miss?
Whatever you do, take a map. Even veteran visitors need a guide to make their way through the Met's labrynthine passageways. The new roman collection is wonderful, however, and very clearly laid out. Almost demands a visit.
