The Galleria Borghese houses a substantial part of the Borghese collection of paintings, sculpture and antiquities. The collection orginated in the 1600s with Cardinal Scipione Borghese, nephew of the Pope. Primarily a collector of classical and neoclassical sculpture, he also patronised contemporary artists and commissioned from, amongst others, Caravaggio, Bernini, Domenichino and Rubens.
