Items relating to the oracle make up the core of this collection and are some of the most compelling that exist from this time and period. There is also a focus on the architecture of the period, fascinating to consider what did and didn’t survive the many earthquakes and how advanced the technology and understanding of architecture must have been, as well of course, the well appreciated, ‘classical’ aesthetics of the time. Statues and sculptures dating from the Classical, Hellenistic and Archaic periods also offer a wealth of insight into the various lives being lead in these times.

There is no dispute that Delphi was one of the wealthiest centres from this period, the kinds of artefacts discovered are fascinating in their detail and construction and it is very interesting to consider the kind of items which would have been available to ancient citizens. Life, I think, would have been most enjoyable for many.

Two Kouros statues called Kleovis and Biton, a Charioteer from a later period, and the Sphinx of Naxos, all statues, are the most famous works in the collection.

Archaeological Museum of Delphi

One of the triumvirate of leading Greek museums, the Archaeological Museum of Delphi houses important sculptures from Archaic, Classical, and Hellenistic Greece. Highlights include such works as 5th-century BC Charioteer of Delphi, a larger-than-life bronze figure, which are among the finest works surviving from classical antiquity.
