Listed under Mountains in India.
Rising shrill out of the surrounding peaks, Nanga Parbet is the earth’s ninth highest mountain, at 8,126 metres it is also one of the world’s most dangerous climbs. Part of the Karakoram Range and western most of the really big mountains, Nanga Parbet dwarfs its neighbours making it appear dramatically tall, with its mountain face rising 4,600 metres out of the base. First attempted in 1895, dozens of teams failed or perished in tumultuous conditions (there were 31 deaths, many of them German) before it was finally conquered in 1953.
The base is easy to get to via the Karakoram Highway, which also provides an impressive approach for the mountain scenery enthusiast as well as aspiring conqueror.
Its name translates to ‘Naked Mountain’.
