Holding the world record for greatest recorded wind speed at 231 mph, Mount Washington is a force to be reckoned with. Mount Washington is the highest peak in the Northeastern United States with its summit reaching 6,288 ft above sea level. Home to the Mount Washington Observatory, a science and educational based institution, Mount Washington is a place of study. However, it is also loved by hikers and tourists.

Although hiking is one way of scaling the mountain, there are alternative routes. The Mount Washington Cog Railway takes you to the summit on a 3 mile train ride. This railway is the second steepest mountain-climbing train in the world.

For those that don’t want to embark on the train ride, there is also an 8 mile auto road that can be driven on to reach the summit. This is a windy road that provides some close up views of deep ravines while driving, so it’s not recommended if you’re uncomfortable with heights.

However, the summit of Mount Washington caters to those who may be more uncomfortable with heights. The summit is wide and allows you to walk around without feeling as if you will fall over the edge. There are also many hiking trails for those who want more of a challenging experience.

Although the famous auto race is discontinued, Mount Washington still hosts two races during the year. One is a 7.5 mile running race and the other is for cyclists. These races are the ultimate challenge for any athlete.

Mount Washington is a great place for visitors of all ages. It’s good for families, the avid outdoorsman, and scientists alike. Visitors will be sure to enjoy everything Mount Washington has to offer; from fantastic views at the summit, intense weather, and many hiking trails.
