On the Georgian - Russian border, locals call this the ‘Ice Mountain’ meaning glacier. Earthquakes plague the region and there is a lot of geothermic activity surrounding this now extinct volcano, partly covered in smooth swathes of hardened lava. Despite its nickname, Mount Kazbek’s steep cone shape means only small glaciers develop on its slopes.
